In vitro fertilization is the procedure in which the man’s sperm and woman’s egg are collected out of their body and are fertilized in laboratory and put back in the woman who can carry pregnancy term. The process is also known as embryo transfer because the fertilized embryos are transferred to the woman’s body to facilitate pregnancy. A large number of women have successfully given birth to healthy babies through this procedure and it has proved to be a boon to those who could not conceive through the normal reproduction process. In medical terms, the process is extremely safe although some pain has to be tolerated while removing the eggs from the woman.
The doctors prefer to place 2-3 embryos in the woman’s uterus keeping in view the chance that if one failure occurs, the others will at least survive. That is why there have been many cases of twins or triplets or even more than that with this procedure in case all the placed embryos become successful in becoming babies.
